Build a controlled maintenance system by distinguishing corroded areas, sound old paint and primer selection.
Establish the full extent of corrosion
A visible rust spot does not establish that the surrounding film is sound. Inspect lifting edges and possible underfilm spread. Restricting preparation to the discoloured spot may leave weak coating at the repair boundary.
Match primer selection to the substrate
Do not assume that one product suits steel, galvanised steel and aluminium with identical preparation. Antirust or synthetic-primer terminology does not guarantee adhesion to every metal. Compare substrate information with the current data sheet and confirm preparation.
Check the transition between old paint and new primer
A repair primer may contact both bare metal and the edge of an old coating. Assess solvent effects and compatibility across that transition. An old film that looks dry is not automatically sound or compatible; use a representative trial.
Technical framework: from substrate to system
Alkyd systems offer primer and finish options for maintenance and production applications. However, alkyd, synthetic and quick-drying descriptions do not imply identical drying speed or resistance. Establish substrate, exposure, application method and delivery schedule first, then select by exact product code. A coating used on a component in a dry interior is not automatically suitable for sustained chemical contact or immersion.
When recoating, consider both the integrity of the old film and its response to the new coating's solvents. Assess compatibility on a representative trial area using current product instructions. Applying a finish without addressing corrosion or unsound existing layers is not a durable maintenance strategy. A complete system defines preparation, primer, any intermediate treatment, finish and suitable thinner together.
Start this assessment with the Alkyd Systems range and refer to the coatings glossary for terminology.
Example project scenario
For a metal door with corroded lower corners and sound paint above, define preparation zones separately. Assess repair boundaries and transitions to the old film, then trial the primer–finish combination. If a lower detail traps water, repainting without correcting it may allow the defect to return.
Checks before making the decision
- Extent: inspect weak coating around visible corrosion.
- Substrate: identify the metal before selecting primer.
- Compatibility: trial the old-film/new-primer transition.
- Details: include water-trapping joints and corners in the work.

Application, acceptance and maintenance planning
Record film build, air movement and ambient conditions when assessing drying and production speed. A thick single coat should not be assumed to replace two controlled coats. Surface dryness and development beneath the surface can differ, requiring separate release points for assembly, stacking and dispatch. Obtain recoating requirements from the current product data sheet.
Do not compare cost solely by price per litre or kilogram. Preparation labour, achievable coat count, rework, downtime and maintenance access all contribute to total cost. For a coded product such as ALKD-70010, do not assume that the code denotes a generic raw material; the site record identifies it as an alkyd primer.
Preparing a technical enquiry and quotation request
Before contacting the technical team, prepare overall and close-up photographs. Identify substrate, any previous product, area or component count, colour and appearance requirements. State the application location, equipment and required completion date. Flag chemical contact, continuous immersion, food-related use or any other condition requiring specific documentation at the beginning of the enquiry.
Request separate identification of primers, finishes and auxiliaries alongside exact product codes. List unresolved technical values as items requiring written confirmation instead of filling them with assumptions. Keeping the approved sample, current technical data sheet and application records together allows purchasing and production to work from the same decision. Packaging information supports ordering, but product-page options do not represent live stock or a guaranteed delivery date.
Send your project details through the quotation request form or discuss unresolved questions with the Versan Boya team.
Frequently asked questions
Is applying antirust primer over rust sufficient?
The product’s preparation requirements must be met. A name alone does not justify retaining loose rust or weak coating. Any claimed surface tolerance must be verified in the exact product documentation.
Is wash primer the same as synthetic primer?
No. Function, substrate and overcoating requirements may differ. Do not interchange products simply because both are primers; confirm the required sequence and compatibility from technical information.
