Investigate alkyd and synthetic coating defects by separating surface dryness, film build and recoating timing.
Do not generalise surface dryness to the whole film
A surface may feel dry while development beneath it remains incomplete. A touch test alone should not authorise handling or recoating. Consider film thickness, conditions and product instructions together rather than relying on surface feel for an accelerated release.
Reconstruct the application history when wrinkling occurs
Record deposited material, first-coat condition and timing of the next coat. Investigate compatibility with any older film as well. Do not blame thinner or temperature from appearance alone; isolate variables through controlled trials.
Do not treat added thickness as the remedy
Depositing more material in one pass to improve hiding can worsen sagging and drying problems. Keep within the specified coat arrangement and application limits. Investigate substrate colour, mixing, dilution and method before increasing deposition.
Technical framework: from substrate to system
Alkyd systems offer primer and finish options for maintenance and production applications. However, alkyd, synthetic and quick-drying descriptions do not imply identical drying speed or resistance. Establish substrate, exposure, application method and delivery schedule first, then select by exact product code. A coating used on a component in a dry interior is not automatically suitable for sustained chemical contact or immersion.
When recoating, consider both the integrity of the old film and its response to the new coating's solvents. Assess compatibility on a representative trial area using current product instructions. Applying a finish without addressing corrosion or unsound existing layers is not a durable maintenance strategy. A complete system defines preparation, primer, any intermediate treatment, finish and suitable thinner together.
Start this assessment with the Alkyd Systems range and refer to the coatings glossary for terminology.
Example project scenario
If a panel wrinkles when recoated the following day, elapsed calendar time alone is insufficient evidence. Review first-coat thickness and actual conditions, confirm the product’s recoating instructions and trial the correct process on a small panel. Plan repair from the defective film’s condition; another coat is not an automatic remedy.
Checks before making the decision
- Records: retain first-coat deposition and recoating time together.
- Conditions: compare substrate and ambient conditions with instructions.
- Trials: isolate wrinkling causes one variable at a time.
- Repair: assess defective film before overcoating.

Application, acceptance and maintenance planning
Record film build, air movement and ambient conditions when assessing drying and production speed. A thick single coat should not be assumed to replace two controlled coats. Surface dryness and development beneath the surface can differ, requiring separate release points for assembly, stacking and dispatch. Obtain recoating requirements from the current product data sheet.
Do not compare cost solely by price per litre or kilogram. Preparation labour, achievable coat count, rework, downtime and maintenance access all contribute to total cost. For a coded product such as ALKD-70010, do not assume that the code denotes a generic raw material; the site record identifies it as an alkyd primer.
Preparing a technical enquiry and quotation request
Before contacting the technical team, prepare overall and close-up photographs. Identify substrate, any previous product, area or component count, colour and appearance requirements. State the application location, equipment and required completion date. Flag chemical contact, continuous immersion, food-related use or any other condition requiring specific documentation at the beginning of the enquiry.
Request separate identification of primers, finishes and auxiliaries alongside exact product codes. List unresolved technical values as items requiring written confirmation instead of filling them with assumptions. Keeping the approved sample, current technical data sheet and application records together allows purchasing and production to work from the same decision. Packaging information supports ordering, but product-page options do not represent live stock or a guaranteed delivery date.
Send your project details through the quotation request form or discuss unresolved questions with the Versan Boya team.
Frequently asked questions
Does touch dry mean ready to recoat?
Not always. The data sheet may define these as different stages. Meet recoating, preparation and environmental requirements together; surface feel does not replace technical instructions.
Can a wrinkled area be sanded and immediately repainted?
Repair depends on film condition and system instructions. Rushing over weak or insufficiently developed coating can repeat the problem. Determine removal, waiting and preparation through technical assessment.
